What is Hatha Yoga?

  • "Ha" and "tha" represent the union of opposites: the sun and moon, prana (energy in the chest/head) and apana (energy in the pelvis), coming together along the pathways of breath.

  • Hatha refers to a dedicated practice—one pursued with persistence until the goal is reached.

  • It is a branch of yoga that focuses on working through the body rather than the mind or emotions.

Core practices of Hatha Yoga include:

  • Asana (poses)

  • Pranayama (breath control)

  • Bandha (body locks)

  • Mudra (hand gestures)

The three main purposes of Hatha Yoga:

  1. Purification of the body

  2. Balancing the physical, mental, and energetic systems

  3. Awakening pure consciousness, allowing one to connect with the divine through physical practices

In my Hatha Yoga class, we begin by warming up with Sun Salutations, followed by asanas (poses) held for 5-7 breaths. We focus on alignment, encouraging you to connect deeply with your breath and body in each pose.
