How does online yoga work?

Namaste yogis! You've come to to the right place if you want to know more about how online yoga works here at Calm Breath Yoga.

Doing yoga online with me at Calm Breath Yoga is quite simple. After you’ve signed up for a class, you will receive a weekly email from me with the Zoom link in it so that you can log into class.

Any electronic device with a camera like a laptop, cell phone, or tablet can be used to participate in my live classes. You can also use a webcam if your computer does not have a built in camera. I use Zoom for my online classes and it’s simple to use. Here are step by step instructions to download it if you don't have it already:

  1. Go to zoom.us

  2. Click the "SIGN UP, IT'S FREE" button

  3. Enter your birthday and click continue

  4. You can either enter your email or sign up with single sign on, your Google account, or your Facebook account

  5. Which ever method you choose, follow the instructions and download the Zoom app

To make your online yoga or meditation experience the best one, I suggest you download Zoom a day or two prior to your first class. 10 - 15 minutes before class, log onto Zoom. You will be in the waiting room until I let you into the class. Don't worry, I will be notified that students are in the waiting room and will let you in right after you log on. If students are logged on a little early, we chat for a little bit before class starts. When the class starts, I will mute all students, unless there’s only 1 student in class.

If you are attending a yoga class, we begin our practice with a short meditation and mantra to bring our awareness to the present moment. We’ll then warm up, do our asana practice and finish in savasana for about 5 minutes then end with a closing mantra.

If you are attending a meditation class, we will get ourselves into a comfortable position for meditation and I will lead you through a guided meditation. We will then practice kinhin, a walking meditation, then sit in silence for 5 to 10 minutes.

After each class, I will ask my students to unmute themselves on Zoom and we chat for a little bit after class.

You may ask, what are benefits of online yoga and meditation? Here's why I think online yoga and meditation are beneficial.

  1. If you’ve never done yoga before and want to see what it’s all about, you can watch my class to see if it’s something you want to do. You don’t even have to turn your camera on if you don’t want to.

  2. If you are nervous or anxious about going to an in-person yoga studio, you can join my class from the comfort of your own home. And again, you don’t even have to turn on your camera.

  3. If you are in another state or country and want to take my class, you can!

  4. You can participate in my class from your spare bedroom, basement, patio, living room, hotel room, the forest behind your house if your Wi-Fi is strong enough, your attic, your office, literally anywhere you want as long as there is an internet connection. No travel necessary!

  5. No giant commitment. You don't have to come to class if life gets in the way that day.

Speaking about committing to a yoga or meditation class. All my classes are pay if / what you can. If you can make it class, that's great! If not, that's ok too! I do have a subscription to my meditations, if you want to do meditations on your own time. I also have 2 special yoga classes that I offer once a month: Full Moon Yoga and Restorative. If you don’t have time to make it to class every week, one of these options may be perfect for you.
